Drought is a word that invokes strong emotions, principal among which are fear and panic. This is not surprising as the phenomenon is usually accompanied by enormous of unpleasant developments such as famine, massive population movement, misery and, in extreme cases, death.
These developments have implications for all Nigerians.
Little wonder, therefore, that the timelines of the onset of rain in various regions of the country and adequate distribution there after have become issues of considerable anxiety to almost all Nigerians.
The fact, however, is that periodic reduction in the normal amount of rainfall in the country is not a new phenomenon. No matter how we pray, drought will come again and again in Nigeria.
A reality that must accepted.
Since large areas of the country are drought prone, the consequences of these inevitable dry spells could be very severe. Because the effects of drought usually linger on, the impact of drought on national development would be felt for years.
Particularly since the drought prone States of Sokoto, Kaduna, Kano, Bauchi and Borno produces much of the Nation’s food crops and nearly all the country’s cattle.
There are two specific methods of cropping with drought;
First, The Emergency Measures.
Second, The Routine Measures.
The Emergency Measures will involve mechanism designed to manage the immediate consequences of the drought when it occurs. In managing the emergency, the key areas of action would be to supply food quickly to the victims of the drought; to provide them with agricultural inputs, especially seeds and fertilizers; to meet their need for the next growing season; and to ensure that they have easy access to these inputs under the relief scheme or through credit.
The Routine Measures involves preparation and defense against the occurrence of drought. And; in this regard, there plans against be a checklist of action plans against drought outcome drown up in advance and permanent national drought relief fund for use whenever a drought occurs.
