Global Gamers Challenge (Hackathon 2024)

We know Flutter devs love a good challenge, so just in time for the new year to really get going, we’re super excited to announce the next Flutter challenge!   

The Global Gamers Challenge is an 8-week contest to design, build, and publish sustainable games, sponsored by Flutter and Global Citizen.  Inspired by the mission of the United Nations-facilitated Playing for the Planet Alliance, which Google joined in 2023, international advocacy organization Global Citizen and Flutter, Google’s open-source framework for building multi-platform applications are partnering to host the Global Gamers Challenge. 

What are sustainable games?

Sustainable games use the power of play to inspire positive environmental action. Imagine Candy Crush, but instead of crushing candies, you’re crushing plastic pollution! Or picture a game like Super Dash, but instead of collecting acorns, you’re turning off lights left on. Here are some more ideas inspired by Global Citizen campaigns running right now!

Encourage a reduction in home energy use

  • Data shows that American homes use an average 3x more kwh than the average home across the rest of the globe. Can you build a game that helps to reduce people’s reliance on inefficient energy sources?

Encourage a reduction in use of single-use plastics

  • Southeast Asia has some of the highest levels of plastic pollution in the world. Consider building a game that encourages players to make swaps to reduce reliance on single-use plastics.

Encourage use of public transportation and overland options for longer distances

  • Europe is home to many of the world’s greatest public transportation systems. Effective games can encourage people to use public transit rather than overland transport, like taking the train rather than flying for longer distances.

Just like Global Citizens do every day, we’re confident that games can encourage players to take small actions for the environment that when done collectively, lead to a large impact.

Young Thug Talks Potential Lil Wayne Collab Album, Addresses Charlamagne Beef on ‘The Breakfast Club’

Fresh off the release of his new album Punk and a pair of Travis Barker-backed Saturday Night Live performances, Young Thug dropped by the Breakfast Club headquarters for an hour-long discussion that opened with a reflection on his previous issues with Charlamagne.

Asked what kept him “away from the Breakfast Club all these years,” Thug initially said he didn’t know before pointing to his and Charlamagne’s “misunderstanding.”

From there, Thugger noted his previous comments against CTG—which were spurred by Birdman’s infamous appearance on the show in 2016—were “all talk” at the time.

Thug said. “I never understood, like, how could it go so, how could it seem so far. We all just talking shit. … I was kinda young back then.

The Mandalorian season 3: Sebastian Stan suits up as Luke Skywalker in jaw-dropping image

He recently reprised that role when he co-starred with Anthony Mackie in Disney Plus‘ The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

Sebastian Stan is one of the biggest stars in Hollywood today. A stalwart of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he has portrayed Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier in a plethora of MCU installments, starting all the way back in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger.

This amazing piece from digital artist ApexForm was first posted back in 2019, and it has become a constant reminder of how amazing Sebastian Stan would look in the role of Luke Skywalker.

Naturally, CGI of that extent would be unfeasible for a long-term project, so it got the internet talking, with many fans suggesting that Lucasfilm should make a Luke Skywalker prequel starring Stan in the titular role because of his resemblance to a young Mark Hamill (or have him show up in The Mandalorian season 3).

On the program, which aired prior to the 2021 BET Hip-Hop Awards, host Big Tigger began to play a word association game with Fat Joe, where he would list off a legendary MC, and Joe would have to give the rapper’s 2021 equivalent.

When 2Pac’s name inevitably came up, Joe paused for a moment before answering. “I should know the 2Pac one.” He continued, “I don’t know, it’s hard to be these guys.

DaBaby hasn’t been the most popular rapper as of late. He’s still experiencing some fallout following the homophobic comments he made over the summer.

When it comes to Raising Kanan season 2, we are currently anticipating that the series will return to Starz in the summer of 2022; production is already underway and unless we get some last-minute update saying otherwise, we’re expecting that it is going to run for ten episodes once more.

This is really the sweet spot for a lot of different shows airing on Starz; there’s room to get into a lot of important subjects but at the same time, also a chance to keep anything from getting too bloated.

ANCIENT PROTO-MATH FOUND IN BABYLONIAN TABLET

Mansfield, a senior lecturer of mathematics at the University of New South Wales Sydney, had suspected the tablet was real. He came across records of its excavation and began the hunt.

Word got around about what he was looking for, and then the email came. He knew what he had to do: travel to Turkey and examine it at the museum.

Hidden within this tablet is not only the oldest known display of applied geometry but a new ancient understanding of triangles. It could rewrite what we know about the history of mathematics, Mansfield argues.

“These findings were published Wednesday in the journal Foundations of Science.”

The way we understand trigonometry harks back to ancient Greek astronomers,” Mansfield tells Inverse.

“I like to think of the Babylonian understanding of right triangles as an unexpected prequel, which really is an independent story because the Babylonians weren’t using it to measure the stars, they were using it to measure the ground.”

Years before discovering this latest tablet, dubbed Si.427, Mansfield was hot on the trail of another ancient Babylonian “document:” Plimpton 322.

“While the location of this artifact was known (it’s located at Columbia University) its true purpose was not.”

INVERSE

Like Si.427, which dates back to roughly 1900 to 1600 BCE, Plimpton 322 is covered in geometric markings — riddles academics have tried to decipher for years.

While the reigning theory was that these markings were a kind of teacher’s cheat code for Babylonian homework problems, Mansfield and colleagues were not convinced.

Space Jam: A New Legacy gave the Looney Tunes a makeover by turning them into 3D/CGI versions, but was the movie secretly criticizing the use of CGI through the Looney Tunes?

The Looney Tunes have gone through a variety of adventures since their debut in 1930, but in 1996 they went through a one-of-a-kind adventure in space in Joe Pytka’s Space Jam.

The movie brought together two different worlds unlikely to cross paths in the real world: the Looney Tunes and professional basketball, this by having Michael Jordan leading the Tune Squad in a life-changing basketball game.

“The biggest, most noticeable change that has sparked a lot of debate among critics and viewers is how Space Jam 2 digitized the Looney Tunes and gave them a 3D/CGI look, which was justified in the story.”

The Looney Tunes spend the first two acts in their traditional looks, but when the time comes for the big game to start, the villain of the story and leader of the opposing team, Al-G Rhythm (Don Cheadle), gives them a makeover to fit with the digital look of everything else.

Bugs Bunny and company are understandably horrified when they see themselves in 3D form, but could this be a sneaky way from the writers of Space Jam 2 to criticize the use of CGI in recent years?

“However, given a big issue surrounding the animation crew behind Space Jam 2, this theory now seems unlikely.”

In an unexpected (and unprofessional) movie from Warner Bros., the studio didn’t credit the whole 2D animation team, and this issue was quickly pointed out by some of the animators, most notably Dave Alvarez.

In response to this, and in a failed attempt to make up for the “mistake”, Warner Bros. shared the names of the whole 2D animation crew and their “gratitude” to them via the official Space Jam 2 Twitter and Instagram accounts, which only drew more backlash.

2,400 year old baskets of fruit discovered in ancient Egyptian city under the sea:

The artifacts were found by a team of researchers from the European Institute for Underwater Archaeology (IEASM), led by French marine archaeologist Franck Goddio, who discovered the ruins two decades ago.

The discoveries were made in the ruins of the sunken ancient city of Thonis Heracleion, which was Egypt’s largest Mediterranean port for centuries until Alexander the Great founded Alexandria in 331 BC.

“Archaeologists have discovered a trove of ancient artifacts from the fourth century BCE, including wicker baskets filled with fruit and Greek ceramics.”

Goddio theorized that the fruit might have been preserved because they were placed in an underground room, possibly with a funerary connotation, according to The Guardian.

The discoveries were made near the site of a large tumulus, a burial mound, which had been previously explored by the team.

“The wicker baskets were filled with doum, fruit from an African palm tree, and grape seeds.”

“Everywhere we found evidence of burned material,” said Goddio, according to CNN . “Spectacular ceremonies must have taken place there.”

“There’s something very strange here,” Goddio told The Guardian. “That site has been used maybe one time, never touched before, never touched after, for the reason that we cannot understandd for the time being. It’s a big mystery.”

Doc Ock Unmasks Tom Holland, Garfield, & Maguire’s Spideys in Spider-Man 3 Fan Art

Holland’s version of Spider-Man seems to be going well for both Sony and Marvel Studios, with SpiderMan: Homecoming and SpiderMan Far From Home doing well financially and critically.

A piece of SpiderMan: No Way Home fan art shows Doc Ock unmasking Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man characters.

Alfred Molina first portrayed Doctor Otto Octavius in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2, serving as the main villain of Maguire’s sequel.

However, the next sequel is shockingly pulling villains from both Raimi and Webb’s movies. Jamie Foxx’s Electro is returning in SpiderMan: No Way Home, but he won’t be blue in the sequel.

Not too long after, Molina was revealed to come back as Doc Ock, with the actor confirming it is the same version of the character in SpiderMan 2.

“Doc Ock’s tentacles made a brief appearance in Marc Webb’s The Amazing SpiderMan 2 to set up a Sinister Six film, but the poor reception to the sequel effectively put an end to Garfield’s era of the character.”

Ziggler and Deville plotted to keep the two stars from seeing each other so that the former could swoop in and win Mandy’s heart.

However, their plans ended up failing after it was revealed that they intentionally caused Otis to arrive late to his first date with Mandy, which ignited a feud between the Fire and Desire teammates.

Otis went on to battle Dolph Ziggler at WrestleMania 36 and won the bout after Rose hit Ziggler with a low-blow.

“Dolph Ziggler, however, is still hopeful that he will get together with Mandy Rose, although he keeps getting turned down by her.”

Mandy Rose made a surprise return to NXT last month and was recently involved involved in an angle with Franky Monet. Otis currently competes on the blue brand as a tag team with Chad Gable known as The Alpha Academy.

He recently got a new look and turned heel for the time in his WWE career.

James Gunn Succinctly Explains the Difference Between Working With Marvel and DC

The director seemed to walk back earlier comments he’d made to The New York Times, and said that he regrets not putting his thoughts across like this:
