Africa’s Internet Shutdowns: Where, Why, and How Do They Happen?

A Global Citizen from Nigeria, Jeremiah, reminisced on how the $Twitter crackdown impacted the community:

“The sudden ban of Twitter, now referred to as X, several years ago sent shockwaves through communities, significantly affecting not only individuals’ ability to connect and share but also disrupting businesses and revenue streams dependent on the platform.” 

He added: “It highlighted the interconnectedness of individuals and businesses in the digital realm, where disruptions to online platforms can have far-reaching consequences on livelihoods.” 

Eventually the Economic Community Of West African States (ECOWAS) court found the government in violation of freedom of expression, and ordered the country to never ban the website again.

In 2024 Senegal is experiencing Nigeria’s history, as civil society organizations are taking the Senegalese government to the ECOWAS court regarding internet shutdowns that took place in June, July, and August 2023 as presidential elections were meant to be en route and popular opposition leader (and fierce critic of President Macky Sall) Ousmane Sonk was criminally charged and held in custody.

The country saw another internet blackout in Feb. 2024 around the time of the country’s elections.

The blackouts not only limited the right to access information and the freedom of expression of everyday citizens, but it also limited the work of journalists on the ground.

The government went so far as to suspend the license of a broadcaster during the election period in Feb. 2024.

Speaking to Global Citizen on the internet blackout in Senegal, the African head of the International Federation of Journalists, Louis Thomasi said: “Political interference is really putting a dent in qualitative journalism.

If you look at what’s happening in Africa all over, it is now a norm that during election periods, the internet will be cut off.

Even yesterday again [13 Feb. 2024] in Dakar, in Senegal, the internet was cut off.”

Internet shutdowns and crimes against humanity

We’ve already mentioned that there’s an ongoing war in Sudan and the country has had its internet cut off several times in the face of the civil war.

Sudanese Global Citizen, Mazen, explains what having online access means to them: “Nowadays, the Internet means life.

It makes you aware and connected with the world.”

Internet blackouts in the country have heavily impacted people’s lives, but their impacts are a lot worse than you can imagine.

The loss of the internet has also meant that conflict-related atrocities can continue without being reported.

Advocacy organization, Access Now, has consistently kept tabs on the violent impacts of shutdowns in Sudan.

The organization noted that in 2021, the day before a pro-democracy protest was to take place, the internet was cut off along with phone and SMS services.

The protest continued regardless.

With citizens having no ability to transmit information inside or outside of Sudan, authorities took the opportunity to crack down physically on protesters.

At least 17 people were killed, and 250 people were injured as a result. 

“The internet blackouts are doing their job and providing cover for the military’s violent takeover and hijacking of a possible democratic future for Sudan,”

Marwa Fatfta, MENA Policy Manager at Access Now, said of the situation.

What can we do? 

“I have experienced natural disasters such as earthquakes, social unrest causing violent protests, terrorist attacks, all sorts of events that caused or forced involuntary internet shutdowns,”

“The one thing I missed the most in any of those instances was critical services and the ability to connect with my loved ones. This is what the internet means to me.”

It’s futile to deny the importance of online access to people across the continent.

However, for as long as the internet exists, there will be ways to exploit it for the use of harm towards everyday citizens in African countries, and around the world.

Since 2011, the United Nations has called for universal internet access as a human right, however, this has not been implemented across countries despite the growing call for it

Right now what Global Citizens can do is remain informed about internet shutdowns and their impacts on communities, and spread the word about them so that their impacts do not go unnoticed and underreported.

You can also follow organizations like Access Now, the Internet Society Foundation, and the Keep it on Coalition (hosted by Access Now) to stay informed.

Monique is confused as to why Evelyn has chosen her, but goes to Evelyn’s apartment to meet her.

Lord Frost risks inflaming tensions as he calls on EU to revise Brexit agreement

The UK government is on course for a diplomatic collision with Brussels as Brexit minister Lord Frost warned it would be a “historic misjudgement” for the bloc not to rewrite key parts of the agreement.

Spider-Man fans are wishing Peter Parker a Happy Birthday today as the Web-Slinger from the MCU celebrates another trip around the sun. Commonly, Spider-Man day is celebrated on August 1st.

But, in the comics, a lot of fans say that August 10th is the “real” Spidey day because his first appearance is listed on that date. All of this gained even more steam on social media because of Spider-Man: Far From Home. Tom Holland’s last adventure in the MCU showed off his passport, which listed the big day as August 10th, 2001.

It’s a fun little detail that has exploded into its own day on the web. With all the clamoring for a trailer exploring what the heck is going on in Spider-Man: No Way Home, it’s easy to see why the character’s birthday is exploding this year. Still, it’s a good time, and people can dream of what this wild trailer for the multiversal adventure will look like.

Air passengers fleeced by ‘rogue operators’ as PCR tests fail to arrive

Air passengers to the UK have spent at least £500m on PCR Covid-19 tests from private companies since mid+May, a Guardian analysis has found, only for the NHS to be saddled with extra costs when firms fail to deliver them.

Concern is mounting that the system for testing travellers is on the brink of collapse, with Heathrow airport calling on Wednesday for the government to allow people to use cheaper lateral flow tests instead.

Travellers have reported having to call the NHS testing hotline on 119 for free taxpayer-funded kits after PCR tests they had paid for did not arrive.

“The government must also introduce robust accreditation for all test providers listed on its website, to prevent travellers being ripped off when trying to buy something as essential as a test.”

ANCIENT PROTO-MATH FOUND IN BABYLONIAN TABLET

Mansfield, a senior lecturer of mathematics at the University of New South Wales Sydney, had suspected the tablet was real. He came across records of its excavation and began the hunt.

Word got around about what he was looking for, and then the email came. He knew what he had to do: travel to Turkey and examine it at the museum.

Hidden within this tablet is not only the oldest known display of applied geometry but a new ancient understanding of triangles. It could rewrite what we know about the history of mathematics, Mansfield argues.

“These findings were published Wednesday in the journal Foundations of Science.”

The way we understand trigonometry harks back to ancient Greek astronomers,” Mansfield tells Inverse.

“I like to think of the Babylonian understanding of right triangles as an unexpected prequel, which really is an independent story because the Babylonians weren’t using it to measure the stars, they were using it to measure the ground.”

Years before discovering this latest tablet, dubbed Si.427, Mansfield was hot on the trail of another ancient Babylonian “document:” Plimpton 322.

“While the location of this artifact was known (it’s located at Columbia University) its true purpose was not.”

INVERSE

Like Si.427, which dates back to roughly 1900 to 1600 BCE, Plimpton 322 is covered in geometric markings — riddles academics have tried to decipher for years.

While the reigning theory was that these markings were a kind of teacher’s cheat code for Babylonian homework problems, Mansfield and colleagues were not convinced.

Workers fired for being Unvaccinated.

Rebecca Dixon, executive director at the National Employment Law Project, told MarketWatch that an employee who has proof of a medical exemption or religious objection to receiving the vaccine may still be eligible to collect unemployment benefits if terminated.

The New York Times reported that other large companies — including Facebook and Google — have said they will require employees to be vaccinated in order to return to the office.

Some companies, including The Washington Post, have made vaccination a condition of further employment; however, few have given details about the consequences of violating vaccine requirements.

“As people continue to return to the office amidst the surging Delta variant, more employers are requiring employees to get the COVID-19 vaccination or risk losing their jobs.”

This could lead to tens of thousands of people across the United States without work or access to unemployment benefits because they refuse to get vaccinated, Ronald Zambrano, employment law chair at West Coast Trial Lawyers, a Los Angeles-based law firm, told MarketWatch.

CNN revealed that it had fired three unvaccinated employees for violating the company’s vaccine requirement for in-person workers, according to an internal memo signed by Jeff Zucker, the cable network’s president, obtained by the New York Times.

According to employment law experts, the three former CNN employees likely won’t receive unemployment benefits, reports MarketWatch.

Bet you didn’t see that coming! While it was certain that at least one of the Nominated Housemates was going to be on their way, nothing prepared us for the fact that there would be a grand total of three Housemates saying goodbye to the Big Brother House.

There are top-selling music groups with fewer people than that.  After a fortnight in the game, Beatrice, Niyi and Yerins were required to bid the others adieu — although they weren’t really required to do it in French — and get out of there, chop-chop.  “Chop-chop” means 15 seconds, here. Biggie really doesn’t waste much time on long, drawn out goodbyes.

Even movie stars need to declutter sometimes. Tom Hanks, for example, has decided he no longer needs his 1992 Airstream travel trailer, which has been a part of his movie-making experience since he bought it in 1993.

Hanks used the trailer on 18 movie sets over the decades, including Sleepless in Seattle and Forrest Gump in the ’90s to movies like The Circle in 2017.

“I got it in the days when movies moved slower,”

Four vehicles used by Tom Hanks will be auctioned off later this month at the Bonhams Quail Lodge Auction, including his on-set Airstream trailer and the 2010 Ford F-450 Super Duty used to tow it, a customized 1980 Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser, and Hanks’ personal 2015 Tesla Model S P85D.

Hanks used the Airstream trailer as a place to rest while shooting 18 movies between the 1990s and 2010s, including Forrest Gump and The Circle.

Hanks ordered the trailer as an upgrade to the standard on-set cast trailers, and it has a full-size sofa inside that had to be customized in order to fit through the door.

“Over the years, Hanks also added stickers to the windows showing which movie locations the trailer was used on.”

It’s challenging to find a rental here. Near the coast, where everyone wants to live, there’s an increased demand for vacation rentals, from which the owner earns more money (faster) than if they were to rent it out as a one-year lease.

A previous landlord, for example, now rents my old one-bedroom apartment for a three-day weekend for $200 — the same price I paid monthly.

Asking friends and locals is a good way to find something. I also looked on Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist, but found nothing in the area I wanted that was in my budget.

1. There are 8.6 million people considered out of work in the U.S. and nearly 10 million job openings.

2. Employers are using a number of incentives, including pet insurance and signing bonuses, to fill those positions.

3. “One of the biggest factors is employers are essentially having to buy back job applicants’ Covid lifestyle,” said one HR executive.

The Department of Labor reported Friday that there are some 8.7 million potential workers who have been looking for jobs and are counted among the unemployed.

At the same time, job placement site Indeed estimates there are about 9.8 million job vacancies as of July 16, or just a few days after the government’s sample period for the monthly numbers.

“This is one of the most complex labor markets in recent memory,”

A just-released survey from Gallagher shows the extent to which employers are willing to go to entice workers in the pandemic era.

Job growth has been surging in recent months, with July’s number, reported Friday, showing an addition of 943,000, the biggest spike since August 2020.

That came on top of respective gains of 938,000 and 614,000 in the previous two months, for an impressive three-month average of 832,000.
