Air passengers fleeced by ‘rogue operators’ as PCR tests fail to arrive

Air passengers to the UK have spent at least £500m on PCR Covid-19 tests from private companies since mid+May, a Guardian analysis has found, only for the NHS to be saddled with extra costs when firms fail to deliver them.

Concern is mounting that the system for testing travellers is on the brink of collapse, with Heathrow airport calling on Wednesday for the government to allow people to use cheaper lateral flow tests instead.

Travellers have reported having to call the NHS testing hotline on 119 for free taxpayer-funded kits after PCR tests they had paid for did not arrive.

“The government must also introduce robust accreditation for all test providers listed on its website, to prevent travellers being ripped off when trying to buy something as essential as a test.”

ANCIENT PROTO-MATH FOUND IN BABYLONIAN TABLET

Mansfield, a senior lecturer of mathematics at the University of New South Wales Sydney, had suspected the tablet was real. He came across records of its excavation and began the hunt.

Word got around about what he was looking for, and then the email came. He knew what he had to do: travel to Turkey and examine it at the museum.

Hidden within this tablet is not only the oldest known display of applied geometry but a new ancient understanding of triangles. It could rewrite what we know about the history of mathematics, Mansfield argues.

“These findings were published Wednesday in the journal Foundations of Science.”

The way we understand trigonometry harks back to ancient Greek astronomers,” Mansfield tells Inverse.

“I like to think of the Babylonian understanding of right triangles as an unexpected prequel, which really is an independent story because the Babylonians weren’t using it to measure the stars, they were using it to measure the ground.”

Years before discovering this latest tablet, dubbed Si.427, Mansfield was hot on the trail of another ancient Babylonian “document:” Plimpton 322.

“While the location of this artifact was known (it’s located at Columbia University) its true purpose was not.”

INVERSE

Like Si.427, which dates back to roughly 1900 to 1600 BCE, Plimpton 322 is covered in geometric markings — riddles academics have tried to decipher for years.

While the reigning theory was that these markings were a kind of teacher’s cheat code for Babylonian homework problems, Mansfield and colleagues were not convinced.

Google rolls out ‘pay calculator’ explaining work+from+home salary cuts

Google has rolled out a new internal calculator to explain potential pay cuts to employees who choose to work remotely — and the early results suggests it will penalize its suburban staffers.

Screenshots obtained by Reuters show that Google employees who previously commuted an hour to Google’s Manhattan offices from nearby Stamford, Conn., for example, would see their salaries slashed by 15 percent if they choose to continue working from home.

Google employees who move even farther away from the company’s offices have been warned they could face even harsher pay cuts.

A worker who left San Francisco for Lake Tahoe, another expensive area of California, would have their pay cut by a whopping 25 percent.

That would mean an employee with a $150,000 salary would suddenly make less than $112,000 per year.

Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn have all warned employees who plan to leave expensive cities like New York and San Francisco that their pay will be slashed while smaller tech companies like Reddit and Zillow say they’ll pay the same regardless of where employees live. 

The calculator states it uses US Census Bureau metropolitan statistical areas, or CBSAs. Stamford, Conn., for example, is not in New York City’s CBSA, even though many people who live there work in New York.

Jake Rosenfeld, a sociology professor at Washington University in St. Louis who researches pay determination, said Google’s pay structure raises alarms about who will feel the impacts most acutely, including families.

Workers fired for being Unvaccinated.

Rebecca Dixon, executive director at the National Employment Law Project, told MarketWatch that an employee who has proof of a medical exemption or religious objection to receiving the vaccine may still be eligible to collect unemployment benefits if terminated.

The New York Times reported that other large companies — including Facebook and Google — have said they will require employees to be vaccinated in order to return to the office.

Some companies, including The Washington Post, have made vaccination a condition of further employment; however, few have given details about the consequences of violating vaccine requirements.

“As people continue to return to the office amidst the surging Delta variant, more employers are requiring employees to get the COVID-19 vaccination or risk losing their jobs.”

This could lead to tens of thousands of people across the United States without work or access to unemployment benefits because they refuse to get vaccinated, Ronald Zambrano, employment law chair at West Coast Trial Lawyers, a Los Angeles-based law firm, told MarketWatch.

CNN revealed that it had fired three unvaccinated employees for violating the company’s vaccine requirement for in-person workers, according to an internal memo signed by Jeff Zucker, the cable network’s president, obtained by the New York Times.

According to employment law experts, the three former CNN employees likely won’t receive unemployment benefits, reports MarketWatch.

Bet you didn’t see that coming! While it was certain that at least one of the Nominated Housemates was going to be on their way, nothing prepared us for the fact that there would be a grand total of three Housemates saying goodbye to the Big Brother House.

There are top-selling music groups with fewer people than that.  After a fortnight in the game, Beatrice, Niyi and Yerins were required to bid the others adieu — although they weren’t really required to do it in French — and get out of there, chop-chop.  “Chop-chop” means 15 seconds, here. Biggie really doesn’t waste much time on long, drawn out goodbyes.

In an unexpected (and unprofessional) movie from Warner Bros., the studio didn’t credit the whole 2D animation team, and this issue was quickly pointed out by some of the animators, most notably Dave Alvarez.

In response to this, and in a failed attempt to make up for the “mistake”, Warner Bros. shared the names of the whole 2D animation crew and their “gratitude” to them via the official Space Jam 2 Twitter and Instagram accounts, which only drew more backlash.

Even movie stars need to declutter sometimes. Tom Hanks, for example, has decided he no longer needs his 1992 Airstream travel trailer, which has been a part of his movie-making experience since he bought it in 1993.

Hanks used the trailer on 18 movie sets over the decades, including Sleepless in Seattle and Forrest Gump in the ’90s to movies like The Circle in 2017.

“I got it in the days when movies moved slower,”

Four vehicles used by Tom Hanks will be auctioned off later this month at the Bonhams Quail Lodge Auction, including his on-set Airstream trailer and the 2010 Ford F-450 Super Duty used to tow it, a customized 1980 Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser, and Hanks’ personal 2015 Tesla Model S P85D.

Hanks used the Airstream trailer as a place to rest while shooting 18 movies between the 1990s and 2010s, including Forrest Gump and The Circle.

Hanks ordered the trailer as an upgrade to the standard on-set cast trailers, and it has a full-size sofa inside that had to be customized in order to fit through the door.

“Over the years, Hanks also added stickers to the windows showing which movie locations the trailer was used on.”

Earlier this year, I relocated to a two-bedroom, 1,100-square-foot apartment with 10-foot ceilings, just a few minutes from one of my favorite beaches.

It’s challenging to find a rental here. Near the coast, where everyone wants to live, there’s an increased demand for vacation rentals, from which the owner earns more money (faster) than if they were to rent it out as a one-year lease.

A previous landlord, for example, now rents my old one-bedroom apartment for a three-day weekend for $200 — the same price I paid monthly.

Asking friends and locals is a good way to find something. I also looked on Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist, but found nothing in the area I wanted that was in my budget.

Job growth has been surging in recent months, with July’s number, reported Friday, showing an addition of 943,000, the biggest spike since August 2020.

That came on top of respective gains of 938,000 and 614,000 in the previous two months, for an impressive three-month average of 832,000.

The artifacts were found by a team of researchers from the European Institute for Underwater Archaeology (IEASM), led by French marine archaeologist Franck Goddio, who discovered the ruins two decades ago.

The discoveries were made in the ruins of the sunken ancient city of Thonis Heracleion, which was Egypt’s largest Mediterranean port for centuries until Alexander the Great founded Alexandria in 331 BC.

“Archaeologists have discovered a trove of ancient artifacts from the fourth century BCE, including wicker baskets filled with fruit and Greek ceramics.”

Goddio theorized that the fruit might have been preserved because they were placed in an underground room, possibly with a funerary connotation, according to The Guardian.

The discoveries were made near the site of a large tumulus, a burial mound, which had been previously explored by the team.

“The wicker baskets were filled with doum, fruit from an African palm tree, and grape seeds.”

“Everywhere we found evidence of burned material,” said Goddio, according to CNN . “Spectacular ceremonies must have taken place there.”

“There’s something very strange here,” Goddio told The Guardian. “That site has been used maybe one time, never touched before, never touched after, for the reason that we cannot understandd for the time being. It’s a big mystery.”

Doc Ock Unmasks Tom Holland, Garfield, & Maguire’s Spideys in Spider-Man 3 Fan Art

Holland’s version of Spider-Man seems to be going well for both Sony and Marvel Studios, with SpiderMan: Homecoming and SpiderMan Far From Home doing well financially and critically.

Alfred Molina first portrayed Doctor Otto Octavius in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2, serving as the main villain of Maguire’s sequel.

However, the next sequel is shockingly pulling villains from both Raimi and Webb’s movies. Jamie Foxx’s Electro is returning in SpiderMan: No Way Home, but he won’t be blue in the sequel.

Not too long after, Molina was revealed to come back as Doc Ock, with the actor confirming it is the same version of the character in SpiderMan 2.

“Doc Ock’s tentacles made a brief appearance in Marc Webb’s The Amazing SpiderMan 2 to set up a Sinister Six film, but the poor reception to the sequel effectively put an end to Garfield’s era of the character.”

James Gunn Succinctly Explains the Difference Between Working With Marvel and DC

The director seemed to walk back earlier comments he’d made to The New York Times, and said that he regrets not putting his thoughts across like this:

In that NYT interview, Gunn said that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige “gives more notes” and is “way more involved with editing than people are at Warner Bros.”

The director tipped his hat to the new brass at WB, and said that he was given unprecedented creative freedom.

“Gunn was sort of poached by WB in 2018 after he was fired by Disney for unearthed inappropriate tweets from a decade ago, for which he has apologized.”

MARVEL

This led to a delay in the third Guardians movie, the script for which Gunn had already written and turned in.

In 2019, he was rehired by Disney to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 after sustained fan pressure and a public vote of confidence from the franchise’s cast. The film is now slated for a May 5, 2023 release.
